QBronze139 | Quantum Computing and Programming Workshop, Online, September 30 – October 4, 2024

We are pleased to announce our next QBronze quantum programming workshop organized jointly by QPoland and Quantum AI Foundation! Join us for the introductory workshop “Quantum Computing and Programming” and learn the basics of quantum computing and how to write simple quantum programs. The workshop is a preparation for the Quantum Games Hackathon 2024, so we primarily invite those who would like to join, but the event is open for all people above 14 years old.

The workshop is free and fully-online but but if you can, we encourage you to help raise funds for the victims of the recent floods in Poland. Click here!

During the quantum workshop, we will use the introductory tutorial Bronze-Qiskit by QWorld. The educational materials, training and mentoring will be in English. We will use Zoom and Discord to conduct the workshop.

We will share homework via QWorld Canvas (five homework assignments, in total 100 pts). The participants who complete them all successfully (at least 50% for each) with at least 70 pts in total, will earn their diplomas!

Participants will be watching the lecture videos and completing the tasks on their own. Mentor support will be provided for participants to ask their questions and share their progress with mentors. The workshop will be held over 5 days, with a total of 20 hours of training.

DAY 1

Introduction to workshops
Greeting and introduction, agenda, certification requirements, preliminary preparations (installation, requirements)

Basics of (classical) Probabilistic Systems
(Classical) probabilistic systems. Building fundamental intuitions about probability using the example of a coin flipping game. Vector notation – describing the state of the system. Probabilistic operators and their matrix representation. Evolution of a state. State of a composite system vs states of its subsystems.

DAY 2
Tuesday, October 1 (18:00 – 21:00 UTC+2)
Introduction to QISKIT
Elements of the quantum program in Qiskit: classical and quantum registers, quantum circuits, measurement, visualization, quantum gates. Running quantum programs, simulators.

Basics of Quantum Systems
Concept of quantum state and quantum operator. Quantum operators (gates) on a single qubit. Visualization of a (real-valued) qubit. Superposition. Measurement of a quantum system – collapse (reduction) of the quantum state.

DAY 3

Quantum Operators on a (real-valued) QUBIT
Visualization of quantum operators acting on a qubit (on the unit circle). Rotations and reflections. Quantum tomography.

DAY 4
Thursday, October 3 (18:00 – 21:00 UTC+2)
Quantum Entanglement and Protocols
Entanglement (quantum correlation). Phase kickback effect and its significance in quantum algorithms. Superdense coding. Quantum teleportation protocol.

DAY 5
Friday, October 4 (18:00 – 21:00 UTC+2)
Grover’s Algorithm
Concept of the Grover’s algorithm – quantum search. Query phase and inversion phase. Significance of the number of iterations. Implementation of Grover’s algorithm.

The participants are expected to work individually at least 16 hours to complete the following sections of Bronze-Qiskit: basics of classical systems, basics of quantum systems, basic quantum operators, quantum correlation and quantum protocols, and quantum search algorithm.

The tutorial is a collection of Jupyter notebooks, and each notebook has a recorded lecture. We use Python to solve the tasks and Qiskit library to code quantum programs. The participants should know at least one programming language, and they should make themselves familiar with Python before the workshop if they do not know Python. We will share the installation instructions and a few notebooks on basics of mathematics and participants should review them before the workshop starts.

You may apply for the workshop by filling the application form until 29.09.2024 (EOD UTC+2) or until the registration limit (100 participants) is reached. Applications later than the deadline won’t be taken into consideration.
