QBronze147 | Quantum Computing and Programming Workshop, Online, December 2 - 6, 2024

QBronze147 | Quantum Computing and Programming Workshop, Online, December 2-6, 2024

For the first time, leading experts from nine African QCousins – QSouthAfrica, QLibya, QNigeria, QCameroon, QAlgeria, QEgypt, QMorocco, QZimbabwe and QGhana – come together in a groundbreaking workshop. This pioneering event fosters cross-border collaboration, knowledge sharing, and collective growth, paving the way for a stronger, more resilient Africa.

We are pleased to announce the first quantum programming workshop organized jointly by QAfrica and QWorld! Join us for the introductory workshop and learn the basics of quantum computing and how to write simple quantum programs.

We invite highschool students, university students and graduates, researchers, professors, and industry experts. We will use introductory tutorials called Bronze-Qiskit by QWorld. We will use Discord to communicate with each other and conduct the workshop. Jupyter notebooks, lectures, and mentoring will be in English. We will also provide mentoring in a few other languages.

We will share homework via QWorld Canvas (five homework assignments, in total 100 pts). The participants who complete them all successfully (at least 50% for each) with at least 70 pts in total, will earn their diplomas!

Participants will be watching the lecture videos and completing the tasks on their own. Mentor support will be provided for participants to ask their questions. We will share homework via QWorld Canvas (five homework assignments, in total 100 pts). The participants who complete them all successfully (at least 50% for each) with at least 70 pts in total, will earn their diplomas!

TALK
Monday, December 2 (17:00 – 18:00 GMT+2)
Ahmed Younes (Professor of Quantum Computing, Alexandria University)

Title: Getting Started with Quantum Computing Tech
Abstract: This talk delves into the transformative potential of quantum computing, a revolutionary technology that leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to perform calculations at unprecedented speeds. We will examine foundational concepts such as superposition and entanglement, which enable quantum bits (qubits) to represent multiple states simultaneously, vastly increasing computational power. Key algorithms, including Shor’s Algorithm for efficient integer factorization and Grover’s Algorithm for enhanced search capabilities, will be discussed, highlighting their implications for cryptography and data retrieval.
Furthermore, we will explore the diverse applications of quantum computing across various sectors, including finance for risk analysis, healthcare for drug discovery, and logistics for optimizing supply chains. The presentation will also introduce the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ2025), an initiative aimed at raising global awareness and fostering collaboration among researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers.
By addressing both the challenges and opportunities presented by quantum technology, this presentation aims to provide a comprehensive overview of its potential to reshape our technological landscape.

The participants are expected to work individually at least 16 hours to complete the following sections of Bronze-Qiskit: basics of classical systems, basics of quantum systems, basic quantum operators, quantum correlation and quantum protocols, and quantum search algorithm.

https://gitlab.com/qworld/bronze-qiskit

The tutorial is a collection of Jupyter notebooks, and each notebook has a recorded lecture. We use python to solve the tasks and Qiskit library to code quantum programs. The participants should know at least one programming language, and they should make themselves familiar with Python before the workshop if they do not know Python. We will share the installation instructions and a few notebooks on basics of mathematics and participants should review them before the workshop starts.
