QSilver15 | Quantum Computing and Programming Workshop, October 8-9 & 15-16, 2022
We are happy to announce QSilver quantum workshop organized jointly by QPoland and Quantum AI Foundation! Join us in the intermediate level workshop “Quantum Computing and Programming” focusing on complex numbers, QFT, and Shor’s Algorithm.
About our quantum workshop
This edition of QSilver is a two-weekend online workshop on quantum computing and quantum programming based on the intermediate material Silver prepared by QWorld. The scope of the QSilver workshop covers complex numbers and Bloch sphere, Quantum Fourier Transform and Shor’s Algorithm. We invite people with a technical background who have already completed one of the QBronze workshops.
Silver is a task-based tutorial composed of Jupyter notebooks. Participants will be completing the tutorial with the mentoring support through Discord as well as the live sessions which will be conducted by the QPoland team. The educational materials are in English, but the language of training and mentoring will be Polish. We will use Zoom and Discord to conduct the workshop.
Homework will be given daily and the participants who successfully complete the homework will be awarded a Silver diploma.

Content
Silver is an intermediate quantum programming tutorial that uses Qiskit framework. Each notebook consists of some theoretical background about the subject, and programming tasks. While it seems like a quantum programming tutorial, quantum computing concepts are eventually taught through programming.
Silver is designed for everyone with a basic knowledge of quantum computing concepts like qubits, quantum gates and quantum circuits and some hand-on experience in quantum programming. No background in physics is required as it focuses on programming and mathematical aspects.
The content is divided into 5 sections.
- Introduction to complex numbers (Basics of complex numbers, quantum states and operators with complex numbers)
- Bloch Sphere (Global and local phase, Bloch sphere, operations on Bloch sphere)
- Operations with Complex Numbers (Quantum gates with complex numbers, operations on Bloch sphere)
- Quantum Fourier Transform and its applications
- Shor’s algorithm
Bronze does not involve any complex numbers which facilitates the learning process and allows visualization of states and gates in 2D plane. Silver starts by introducing the complex numbers and discusses quantum states and quantum operators with complex numbers alongside with the introduction of Bloch Sphere. The rest of the tutorial is devoted to Quantum Fourier Transform and its applications, including quantum phase estimation and order finding and finally Shor’s algorithm is introdcued.
Schedule of the quantum workshop
The quantum workshop will be held during 4 days with approximately requiring 16 hours of training. Participants are expected to follow the workshop materials and complete the tasks on their own. Each day, there will be a live session about the content of the day and participants will have a chance to ask their questions. During the day and after the live session, participants will be working on their own on the day’s material while getting help from the mentors in the Discord channel. The topics to be covered each day by the participants are given below:
October 8 Saturday (UTC+2):
16:00 – 18:00 – Introduction to complex numbers
18:00 – 20:00 – Participants will work on the notebooks of the day
October 9 Sunday (UTC+2):
16:00 – 18:00 – Bloch sphere, Operations with complex numbers
18:00 – 20:00 – Participants will work on the notebooks of the day
October 15 Saturday (UTC+2):
16:00 – 18:00 – Quantum Fourier transform and its applications
18:00 – 20:00 – Participants will work on the notebooks of the day
October 16 Sunday (UTC+2):
16:00 – 18:00 – Order Finding Algorithm and Shor’s Algorithm
18:00 – 20:00 – Participants will work on the notebooks of the day
Homework and Diploma
We will use Canvas learning management system for homework tracking. Homework will be given on a daily basis. Participants who earn at least 50% points from each homework and at least 70% from all homeworks in total, will be awarded QSilver diploma.
Code of Conduct
Our event is dedicated to providing a harassment-free workshop experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices. We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any event venue, including talks, workshops, parties, Twitter and other online media. Event participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the event.
We respect the minors (children under age 18) and we must make every effort to protect their rights. All private relationships, private communications (including social media channels), or sexual contacts with minors are prohibited.
The default communication channel between the organizers and participants is e-mail. Except filing the application form, the contact info of any attendee or participant cannot be requested by any person from organizer side (i.e., mentor, educator, speaker, organizer, sponsor, or volunteer). On the other hand, any person from organizer side may share his or her contact info with a participant who is not a minor, upon request by the participant.
A minor can access the emails of the main organizers on the event’s website. If a minor interested in working with a person from organizer side for scientific or pedagogical purpose, then he or she should read this document before contacting this person:
