QBronze89 | Quantum Computing and Programming Workshop, June 24-29, 2022

We are pleased to announce the first QBronze quantum programming workshop in Ghana! The entangling event for QGhana will take place in the second half of June. Join us for the introductory workshop “Quantum Computing and Programming”. Learn the basics of quantum computing and how to write simple quantum programs. The quantum workshop in Ghana is part of QSpring2022 project!

We are inviting high school students, university and graduate students, researchers, professors, and industrial people from Ghana. During the workshop, we will use the introductory tutorial Bronze-Qiskit by QWorld. We will use Discord to communicate with each other and conduct the workshop by Zoom meetings. The whole workshop will be conducted in English, so the basic understanding of English is necessary.

We will share daily homeworks via QWorld Canvas (five homeworks, in total 100 pts), and the participants who complete them all successfully (at least 50% from each) with at least 70 pts in total, will earn their diplomas!

All material will be explained on Zoom by the workshop leader. Participants will be given time to work on the problems before moving to the discussion of solutions. Mentor support will be provided for participants to ask their questions and share their progress with mentors.

Installation Day | Saturday 18 June (GMT)
16:00 – 18:00 – (Optional) The mentors will be available to help the participants who had issues with the installation of everything needed for the workshop.

Day 1 | Friday 24 June (GMT)
16:30 – 17:00 – Welcome session with explanations.
17:00 – 18:00 – The first day introduces the basic concepts of bits, and IBM’s tool Qiskit to simulate quantum circuits/programs.

Day 2 | Saturday 25 June (GMT)
16:30 – 17:00 – Summarized explanation of the notebooks covered during the previous day and a Q&A session.
17:00 – 18:00 – The second day deals with quantum bits, how they can be visualized, superposition, measurement and some examples of quantum operations on qubits.

Day 3 | Monday 27 June (GMT)
16:30 – 17:00 – Summarized explanation of the notebooks covered during the previous day and a Q&A session.
17:00 – 18:00 – The third day is related to quantum tomography, two-qubit systems and some common operations used in quantum algorithms.

Day 4 | Tuesday 28 June (GMT)
16:30 – 17:00 – Summarized explanation of the notebooks covered during the previous day and a Q&A session.
17:00 – 18:00 – The fourth day deals with the concept of entanglement and its use in the transmission of quantum information via superdense coding and quantum teleportation.

Day 5 | Wednesday 29 June (GMT)
16:30 – 17:00 – Summarized explanation of the notebooks covered during the previous day and a Q&A session.
17:00 – 18:00 – The fifth day introduces the basic concepts for the implementation of one of the first quantum algorithms that outperformed the classical one: Grover’s Search Algorithm.

The participants are expected to work individually at least 16 hours to complete the following sections of Bronze-Qiskit: basics of classical systems, basics of quantum systems, basic quantum operators, quantum correlation and quantum protocols, and quantum search algorithm.

The tutorial is a collection of Jupyter notebooks, and each notebook has a recorded lecture. We use python to solve the tasks and Qiskit library to code quantum programs. The participants should know at least one programming language, and they should make themselves familiar with Python before the workshop if they do not know Python. We will share the installation instructions and a few notebooks on basics of mathematics and participants should review them before the workshop starts.
